What is mandala?

A mandala is a circular structure with radial symmetry, meaning that the design radiates out symmetrically from the center. It is one of nature’s more wonderful and perfect configurations.

According to The Mandala Project website, the mandala “represents wholeness, and can be seen as a model for the organizational structure of life itself—a cosmic diagram that reminds us of our relation to the infinite, the world that extends beyond and within our bodies and minds.”

The team “art challenge” assignment is to….

1. Go outside! Collect repeating natural items like…

• leaves

• flowers

• rocks

• branches

• acorns, pine cones, etc.

2. Arrange them into an interesting Mandala Design

• Mandalas are “circular patterns with repeating elements”

3. Consider all the elements and principles of art when creating your Madala.  See the attached elements and principles handout.  Part of your grade for this assignment will be based on your use of the elements and principles.

• The elements of line, shape, color are especially important

• The principles of pattern, repetition, rhythm, movement, contrast, balance, and unity are also very important.

3.  Take a picture of your mandala when from the beginning, in the middle and the final completed (on your phone, I-pad, etc.)

4.  Build your Mandala photo into the slide project in the Google Classroom.  Make sure your names are in the slide so I know who to give credit to.
